From Diana to Kate
After the divorce, Diana returned the ring, as tradition demanded, to the royal treasury. After her death, Charles allowed his sons to each choose one piece of jewelry from their mother’s possessions. William chose a gold watch and the younger Harry chose a wedding ring.
When it became known that William was preparing to propose to Kate Middleton, Harry showed a gesture of brotherly love and handed the ring to William (it should be noted that at that time Harry was a free young man and did not think much about his own family life).

Afterward, William will say in an interview that he was very happy about this gift from his brother, and his late mother was thus able to be by his side at this important moment. “This jewelry is special to me, and Kate is special to me now, so it was the only right decision to put them together.”
The changes the ring has undergone since the change of ownership
After Kate received Diana’s ring in 2010, she made changes to it. The reason was rather trivial: it turned out to be large in size and rotated on Kate’s finger. In 2011, royal jewelers J. Collins and Sons added tiny platinum beads to the inner bezel, which allowed to reduce the size of the ring without changing the appearance and geometry of the jewelry.

Since her marriage, Kate has worn the ring in conjunction with her engagement ring, made of Welsh gold. According to experts today Diana-Kate’s engagement ring is estimated to be worth £300,000.
Due to the dramatically increased popularity of the sapphire and diamond ring, the Royal Court imposed a ban on the jewelry house Garrard, which was the author of the model, from further replication of the jewelry.
